A boy in New Jersey was expelled from a Catholic Pre-K for growing his hair long. I understand some faiths are strict about the sexes appearing separate.

The reason he was growing it out? To contribute the excess to Locks of Love, an organization that provides wigs for kids going thru cancer treatment. His mom latched onto the idea after her dad died of lung cancer, to honor his memory.

FTS...I am so sick of "religious" people thinking they're so pious by superficial observance & missing the greater value, in this case, comforting the sick. Another example...husband's niece is getting married to a guy from Syria. His female family members are considered pious for donning the much maligned Muslim womens' head scarf. Never mind that these people refused to help my sister in law pay for something that is beyond her reach even tho they are perfectly capable of helping, they're pious, modest women...fuck that shit! If I had the training & licensure to run a preschool, this little guy would be welcome in mine, long hair & all!

Agreed. People are ridiculous. Especially fanatics or people with annoying superiority complexes, especially religious superiority complexes. I'm like, "Hate to rain on your parade but you're not that important anymore, because we got over your bullshit and realized everyone was human and that there are many kinds of good people, not just people like you. So move over."

Yeah this story is fucked up. I personally know what it is like to have no hair. I lost my hair do to chemo. Locks of love is a wonderful organization. I try to donate when I can. :)

My friend donated her hair and wore her head bare for all to see, to make a point.

Personally, I wouldn't be going to any catholic school, preK or not, but that's just a personal choice. As for this case, I agree with what's been said here so far. I've heard of people getting fired from catholic schools because they got a divorce. the school said the teacher in question was setting a bad example for the kids by doing this. Talk about narrow minded! It's a classic case of "don't judge a person's situation until you've lived it". In this case, it's even more ridiculous, since the kid was doing this out of love and respect for those with cancer, past or present. Wouldn't God want this to happen? And wouldn't he be ashamed of the athorities in this facility for kicking him out for showing some love, even if it was in a different way than some?

Ocean dream I don't think I could send my daughter to any Catholic or really any other religious school. One of the guys I trained a few years back talked about tutoring his friend's teenage daughter in history & proof reading one of her papers. The grammar was no better than an IM sent to a friend, and the school doesn't have higher standards for formal written assignments. Trainee told his friend "Dude you'd be better off sending her to public & saving your money." My SIL's youngest daughter believes AIDS is a "gay disease", and she graduated from a religious high school. ?! These people are from Africa, and how would she care to explain both north & subsaharan African women getting AIDS & transmitting it to their infants if only gay males get & spread it? This disease is over 20 years old, and there's no guarantee teachers or material are better at private schools. I met a man from Chile, and he told me kids being in private/parochial schools there is, like in parts of Europe, a sign the child couldn't keep up with the rigorous state curriculum.

That's awful staff getting fired from Catholic schools because of their own personal divorces. Actress Valerie Bertinelli is an excellent example of a divorcee rebuilding her life. She kicked rocker Eddie Van Halen out when she found he'd boarded a flight with a vial of cocaine in his pocket & their young son in tow. Eddie has since cleaned up his act, even reconciled with the mother of his child, who attended his wedding in '09 with her fiance. Their son can perform with his famous dad. Had she "stood by her man", she would either be 1) miserable with a crackhead, or 2) a widowed mom. Granted some divorces are frivolous and maybe regretted by one or both parties, and others, like this one, are for the best, but that is none of an employer's business.

By Law you can and it is completely moral. It's a private and privelleged establishment. It's run by the private person and he has every right to do what he wants. If you atend one you got to listen to the rules or get out.

That's true. that's why I choose not to attend such facilities, and would encourage anyone who asks me to do the same. There are other ways to practice your faith. You can pray at home, read the Holy books, go to church, and probably many others I'm not mentioning here. You don't need to go to one of these facilities. If you want to, and you agree with the rules, then by all means, go ahead. Legally, they're allowed to do this kind of thing, yes, but I can't understand it, morally.

That's why I will no longer consider a private school...they're more concerned with superficial nonsense like school uniforms & hair lenghth & teachers' private lives than teaching my child to write a coherent essay or giving her an updated science curriculum. And it's not just Pre K thru Grade 12 they get ridiculous. Mr. Sponge's niece attends a private nursing college that is relatively new, and they seem more concerned with frivolous stuff like their interns having scrubs in the school's colors & course material like "Trans Cultural Nursing" than they do more relevant issues like the transmission of blood borne pathogens. I was surprised how little she knew, was even deluded into thinking if she stuck to womens' or childrens' health facilities she could avoid exposure to these viruses. Untrue based on years of working in laboratories in that state & knowledge of the nature of some of these practices. By law they can make superficiality a part of the "listen to the rules or get out" and enforce it but I am interested in a different set of priorities for my daughter, so, like the anti war crowd in the '60's chanted, "Hell no we won't go."

Exactly. If you send your children to a place where they will be raised to become narrow-minded, nasty, arrogant asses, you're a horrible parent and no better than the people who run them. If I ever have children, I'll raise them in a free environment where they can choose their own path in life. Because their way isn't necessarily my way and vice versa, and I won't hate my kid if they develop different beliefs than mine.
God, and everyone wonders why I hate people.

Exactly, Feathery. I couldn't have said it better myself.
